Must Haves for Every Home

Must Haves for Every Home

interior design Chattanooga

We live in a busy world. We are always on the go and working harder than ever. So when you come home you should be able to relax and enjoy it. Your home doesn’t have to be a spa for it to feel luxurious; it just needs a few key pieces. There are luxuries, big and small, that everyone should be able to enjoy at home.

A Plush Throw

When you sit down on the sofa after a long day a plush throw is so comforting. It’s perfect for a quick nap and easy to grab and wrap around yourself on a chilly night.  Whether neatly folded or tossed casually over the back of the sofa, a plush throw adds a cozy feel.

Pretty Barware

There’s just something about drinking from a nice wine glass or pouring a drink from a decanter. Even if you prefer iced tea or lemonade, sometimes you just want to feel fancy. Using nice barware feels just as good on pizza night as it does when entertaining guests. So be sure to keep some on hand even if you only break it out once in a while. It’s nice to have the option.

A Sturdy Tray

We just can’t say enough about how important it is to have a pretty and sturdy serving tray since it has so many uses. Such as having coffee in bed on a Saturday morning, carrying iced tea to the front porch on a hot summer night, using it for popcorn on movie night, or just being pretty on your coffee table. Even if you have only one, though we are all for having them throughout the house, be sure to use something that goes with everything, is a good size and has handles for easy transport.

A Comfy Chair

It may be in a bedroom, the living room or even the home office but every home needs at least one big comfy chair. This is the best way to create a cozy little reading nook. You don’t always want to sit on the sofa to read your latest page turner and you don’t necessarily want to lie in bed in the middle of the day. This is why a reading nook is so important. It’s a great place to relax and recharge your batteries. And remember that plush throw we were talking about earlier? You could probably use an extra one for this space.

Which of these luxuries is your home missing? Visit our showroom where we have luxuries for your home in every size and style.

Five Ways to Organize with Style

storage bed / box / file cabinet / ottoman / chest

Getting organized at home is a popular new year’s resolution. When your home is organized and things are easy to find, it just makes life a little better. We believe getting organized is just as much fun as decorating when you use the right pieces. These are five of our favorite ways to organize with style.

  1. A bed with built in storage is a lifesaver is a small bedroom. It makes great use of the space underneath and is the perfect place to store extra bedding or clothes. Many beds even offer built in drawers on the sides, allowing for more storage.
  2. Pretty boxes and containers are always stylish and smart. Not only do they store small items that can make a space look cluttered but they are perfect for styling with other pieces. Mix them into a bookshelf with books and other decorative items or simply place them on top of a dresser or coffee table. They’re also a great solution for storing photographs if you don’t have a place to keep albums.
  3. Wood file cabinets blend right in with other pieces of furniture. Many lateral file cabinets can double as a nightstand. This is a stylish way to keep your important documents within reach if you don’t have the space for a home office.
  4. Storage ottomans are always a go-to when you need stylish storage because they’re available in endless fabrics and styles and they’re also super functional. Not only can items such as books, magazines, and toys be stored away and out of sight but they also serve as footrests and extra seating and are easily moved around as needed.
  5. If you’re trying to save space while getting organized then consider a piece like this door chest. Taller than a dresser, but not as wide, it makes use of vertical wall space saving room for other pieces. It also features trays behind doors, small cubbies and a drop-front drawer that allows you to use electronic components.

Make this the year you finally get organized! We have so many more options for stylish and functional pieces that will get your home in order in no time. Come by our showroom to find what works for you.

Five Versatile Pieces for Your Home

Every home is different. You couldn’t create a design for one home and expect it to work in the one next door. But you could take some key pieces and make them work just about anywhere. That’s because design is often about the details. Investing in some key pieces that are classic and functional is always a smart move. Multi-purpose pieces with a timeless look can be a part of your home and family for years. These are some of our favorite versatile pieces and this is why they work.

4. Accent pieces, like this one from HGTV Home, can be used in literally any room. They also provide extra storage and a platform for artwork. This one in particular uses mixed materials so it can work with a variety of designs which is another reason it would be a great asset to your home.

5. This console table from Flexsteel is a hard-working and multi-purpose piece. It’s made of solid wood which makes it a great investment. It could function as a writing desk, a sofa table a foyer piece or even an island in a long narrow kitchen. Belvedere Sofa by Flexsteel

Leather is great for so many reasons. For one thing, it’s durable.  With the right care a leather sofa will last for years. Another great thing about leather is that it’s classic. Leather sofas will never go out of style. Finally, it’s versatile. You can use a leather sofa and achieve so many different looks. The Belvedere sofa from Flexsteel is the perfect example of a transitional sofa that you would be able to decorate around for years.  We styled this sofa two ways to prove that you can have totally different looks with the same sofa.

leather2

mirror/accent table/throws/cocktail table/trays/chair/rug

A leather sofa is a great starting point for a beautiful neutral space that’s layered with texture. Neutrals can be just as exciting as bold colors when you use the right pieces. A linen chair adds softness to the room. Metals, natural woods, and plush throws and pillows turn a living room with a leather sofa into a cozy retreat. This is an elegant space yet it’s still very inviting.

leather3

pillow/artwork/accent table/cocktail table/chair/vase/rug

The same leather sofa can exist in a colorful and modern space. A bright green chair adds a punch while edgy pillows, tables and artwork add a more contemporary feel. The vintage and faded look of the rug brings it all together. This space is sophisticated and chic.

To get the most out of your leather sofa just remember a couple of things. Be sure to buy genuine leather rather than synthetic. Genuine leather wears so much longer and only looks better with age. Also, be sure it’s a transitional style, which means it combines classic and modern details that will make it a versatile piece. When in doubt, visit our design center where we can help you choose the perfect leather sofa.

A Pattern Guide

A Pattern Guide

interior design Chattanooga

When designing a space there really are so many ways to personalize it. Pattern plays a huge role in making a space unique and giving it the look that makes it feel like home. When meeting with a designer or decorator it can be difficult to express what you want if you don’t know what your favorite patterns are called. Window treatments, sofas, chairs, pillows, rugs and sometimes even wallpaper are each unique opportunities to incorporate a favorite pattern into a design. We’ve put together a short guide of some of today’s most popular patterns so you can discuss them like a pro.

interior design Chattanooga

Though ikats have a long history they have recently become one of the most popular patterns in design. Ikat, pronounced ee-kaht, is believed to have originated in Indonesia and eventually made its way to the west by textile importers. The name comes from the method of dying the thread before weaving. Ikat patterns can vary in size and scale but they typically have multiple saturated colors and are a great way to add a global flair to any space.

Geometric patterns are often used in modern spaces. The term geometric doesn’t refer to one pattern specifically but more of a type of pattern. They can be round, square, or even a combination of shapes. It is a consistent repetitive pattern with a crisp look.

Chevron, also known as a zig-zag pattern, is still one of the biggest trends in patterns and decorating. Chevron is often seen as one color contrasted with white. However as it becomes increasingly popular it is now available in more forms and every color you can imagine. Chevron is always striking and modern.

Toile is great example of a classic pattern that can take on many different looks. Toile is a bit of a broad term as it can look like many different things. However, it will always feature a scene such as a landscape. Traditional toile typically features scenes from regions in France in the 18th century. However, they are also produced with scenes from the Orient, which is often referred to as pagoda.

The greek key is often used as a border but can also be a repetitive all-over pattern. This pattern comes from a basic greek symbol, the meander, which is named after the Meander river in Turkey. This river twists and turns, much like what you see in the pattern. Greek key is used in all types of spaces and easily paired with other patterns, due to its classic appeal.

interior design Chattanooga

Houndstooth, often seen in menswear, is another classic pattern. It’s traditionally seen in black and white, brown and white and other earth tones. It’s usually a small scale two-toned pattern that resembles a broken check. However many houndstooth patterns are available in bright colors and a large exaggerated scale. This is such a fun way to add a twist to a classic.

Did you see your favorite pattern? Have a question about something that isn’t listed? Just visit our design center where we can answer all your questions and find your favorite patterns.

Tips for Choosing a Sectional

Tips for Choosing a Sectional

A sectional is a great option in a living area for so many reasons. It provides a lot of seating, it creates definition of the space, and it can be customized to suit the space and layout of the room. There are however many factors to consider before you purchase a sectional. It isn’t complicated, it’s just a matter of understanding a few key factors about your space and how you’re going to use it. So before you go out and buy that new sectional, you should know how to answer these questions.

living room furniture Chattanooga

Flexsteel

It’s always important to know the size of a space. In order to decide how big the sectional should be, you have to know how much room you’re working with. Know the length of each wall as well as the size of doorways and windows. Don’t forget architectural elements such as a staircase or fireplace. If you don’t have a wall long enough to accommodate a sectional then consider floating it out in the room. This will create “zones” and walkways in the space.

living room furniture Chattanooga

Kincaid

Sectionals work even in small spaces but there’s no reason to place a large, oversized sectional in a space that doesn’t need a lot of seating. A keeping room or a second living area that isn’t used as often might only require a small sectional and a chair or two.

living room furniture Chattanooga

Flexsteel

Knowing how the space will function makes all the difference in knowing what type of sectional you should use. In a casual space such as a game room or movie room you can go with a more relaxed look. A reclining sectional complete with cup holders will give you a real movie theater experience even at home.

living room furniture Chattanooga

Flexsteel

Think about how often you’ve made changes in your home in the last few years. Do you rearrange the furniture a lot? Add and remove items often? Sectionals aren’t quite as versatile as a sofa and a couple of chairs. However, if a sectional is something you’ve always wanted and it makes the space more functional, then you may not feel the need to keep making changes.

living room furniture Chattanooga

Kincaid

Choose a style that works with the overall look of your home. In a more modern home with clean lines and contemporary textures such as brushed nickel or stainless steel, choose something sleek and tailored like this one that has high legs and a little bit of curves. In a more casual space with a traditional look you could opt for something with a skirt or even with built in recliners.

Following these tips will help you choose a sectional that will work with your home and function well for you and your family. However, you never have to go it alone! All you have to do is visit our design center and we’ll help you every step of the way.
