How to Create a Luxurious Bedroom

If there's one room in your home where you deserve a little luxury it's your bedroom. More than a place to sleep, the bedroom is where you begin and end your day. Dreaming of your own personal luxury retreat? It's totally possible with just a few easy changes. Turn your bedroom into that luxurious space you've always wanted with these five tips.

Eastern Accents bedding

Eastern Accents

Start with the bed. Obviously, you need a great mattress. But what you put on the bed is just as important. Don't skimp on blankets and pillows. Think layers! You should be able to sink into your bed at the end of the day. Layer your bed with high-quality bedding then add plush pillows and throws in rich textures. Drape a faux fur throw over the foot of the bed so you can easily grab it on cool nights.

Riverside nightstand

Riverside

Our next tip may sound simple, but it's important. Clear the clutter! If there's one thing luxurious spaces always have in common it's a lack of clutter. With all the chaos of day-to-day life, you need a space where you can clear your mind before you go to sleep. So remove all those unnecessary items from your nightstand and keep it simple with a lamp and fresh flowers.

eastern accents mirror

Eastern Accents

Hang a statement mirror. An interesting mirror with a polished frame has a posh feel. Place it over the bed to create a focal point or hang it above a dresser as an alternative to a standard mirror. It will create a pretty focal point and double as artwork.

Kincaid ottoman

Kincaid

Every bedroom feels a little more luxurious with extra seating. If you have the space then create a separate conversation area with a pair of chairs and an ottoman. Even if you only have room for a single chair choose one that's cozy and comfortable. The point is to carve out a little space in your bedroom that's just for you. Style it with a chic pillow, and if room allows, a pretty ottoman so you can kick back and relax with a good book.

Eastern Accents lighting

Eastern Accents

Layer lighting. Overhead lighting simply isn't enough for a bedroom. There are many ways to incorporate different levels of light. Place lamps on nightstands or install sconce lights on either side of the bed. Put overhead lighting on a dimmer and add lamps near seating or any dark pockets of the space. Layered lighting gives you options and great lighting always makes a space feel more high-end.

Creating a luxurious bedroom is about more than how it looks. When all of these elements come together it creates a space that makes you feel good. This will result in your own retreat where you'll sleep well every night. What's more luxurious than that?

Tips for Decorating Large Spaces

There's a lot of advice out there about decorating small spaces. Understandably so, since small spaces can be tricky and you want to be sure you're choosing pieces that are multi-functional and won't overcrowd your home. However, it can be just as challenging to decorate a large home and often requires a different approach. So if you're planning on moving to a bigger space, or struggling with the one you have, then keep reading. These are some of our best tips for decorating large spaces.

Kincaid bedroom set

Kincaid

Use furniture with height to anchor the space. A poster bed or canopy bed will create a beautiful focal point in a space with a high ceiling. If you prefer a bed that's a little less grand then anchor the room with a large cabinet or armoire.

Kincaid lighting

Kincaid

Use dramatic lighting. Highlight the special architectural features of your home by incorporating interesting lighting that will draw the eye up and around the space. Use this as an opportunity to bring new elements into the space. For example, this orb light contrasts well with the exposed wood beams.

Uttermost large spaces

Uttermost

In a space with vaulted ceilings use upholstery with high backs. Low backed chairs and sofas can be dwarfed by tall ceilings. Group chairs and sofas into conversation areas then layer in rugs to pull it all together.

Kincaid wall art

Kincaid

Take advantage of extra wall space and create an eclectic gallery wall. But don't stop with just a few pieces. Go big and don't be afraid to mix paintings with pretty mirrors or other interesting pieces. Anchor the space between windows with pairs of prints.

Kincaid curtains

Kincaid

Add a dramatic effect with curtains. Highlight large windows by taking curtains all the way to the ceiling. The softness will make the space more inviting and help absorb sound. Simple curtain rods with linen panels is a timeless look for any space.

How often do you flip through the pages of a decorating magazine and see a living room with a matching set of tables? Hardy ever, is probably what you're thinking. That's because interior design isn't about “matching” sets. It's about creating a look that's unique, distinctive and thoughtfully put together. Follow these tips to learn how to mix tables in your home like a pro.

Mimic shapes but don't repeat them. A curvy drum table is a perfect complement to a sleek round cocktail table and it's a chic alternative to the expected end table. The warm patina of this table blends well with finishes such as cherry and pecan making it a fun piece to pair with antiques.

Use contrasting textures. It's easy to introduce new elements to a living room with an upholstered cocktail ottoman. This little lucite and brass beauty adds a bit of glam to any space. Lucite is so posh and a touch of gold is a great way to add some warmth to a neutral space.

Match metal for metal. Take your standard cocktail table to the next level with a trendy accent piece that features interesting details or a unique design. This angular table in chrome blends well with the clean lines of the cocktail table and its silver metal base. It's the perfect mix of modern and classic.

Balance styles. A piece made with “raw” materials such as iron and reclaimed wood is the perfect contrast to more polished and traditional tables. Use this pairing to add character and depth to an otherwise one-dimensional space.

wood blend tables Chattanooga

Kincaid / Uttermost

Wood finishes should blend, not match. Pay attention to the color tones. This is an easy indicator for how well pieces will work together. For example, grey finishes tend to have cool undertones and pieces such as oak and cherry tend to have warm undertones. Keep wood tones similar to seamlessly blend different styles.

Get the look you really want! Shake up your style with one of these fun and unique pieces. Start with just one piece or let us help you put together a whole new look.

We are all for getting creative when it comes to decorating. Experimenting with a new look or fabric is a great way to find your unique style. Sometimes that means stepping outside the box and breaking the rules. But there are some decorating rules that always apply and following these rules will keep you from making some common decorating mistakes. Read on to find out how easy they are to fix!

uttermost artwork

Uttermost

Skimpy artwork. Artwork that's too small just ends up looking lost and out of place. If you're going to use small prints on a big wall then use several of them to create a grid that will fill the space and create major impact. Another option is to replace small prints all together with one large piece.

Kincaid light fixtures

Kincaid

Poorly lit spaces. Too little light can leave a room feeling cave-like while lighting that is too bright can feel institutional. Create pools of light with strategically placed table lamps, floor lamps and wall sconces. Even a space that's flooded with natural light during the day will need lamps to create a cozy glow in the evening hours.

Kincaid rugs

Kincaid

Using rugs that are too small. Rugs that aren't big enough for a space simply look like an afterthought and make the room look disjointed. As a general rule a rug should be big enough that it touches all the furniture in a seating area. If a piece doesn't quite reach then the rug isn't big enough. It's always better to err on the side of a rug being too big than too small.

 Kincaid pattern furniture

Kincaid

Using one fabric on everything. You shouldn't use the same fabric on all the seating in your living room. It's just too monotonous. Instead, choose at least three fabrics with varying patterns but coordinating colors to add interest to the space. The eyes will have different places to land and the space will have a pretty layered look.

Riverside sofa table

Riverside

Pushing all the furniture up against the wall. This leaves an awkward expanse of space in the middle of the room. Arrange furniture so that it creates conversation areas. Start by floating the sofa in the room across from the main focal point. Then add chairs and others pieces in such a way that it creates zones throughout the space. Create a pretty look behind the sofa with a sofa table. It's also a great spot to add some extra lighting.

If you've made one of these common decorating mistakes, don't worry. You never have to go it alone no matter what kind of decorating dilemma you're facing. We're always here to help you create your best and most beautiful home.

Five Tips for Choosing the Right Sofa

Shopping for a new sofa can be overwhelming. Of course you want to choose one that will be comfortable. But it has to look great too. There are so many choices to make. You have to consider fabrics, weigh style options and know that it's high quality. When you know what to look for the process is a lot less stressful. So before you start shopping read these five tips on how to choose the right sofa for your home so you can make a decision you'll be happy with for years to come.

Kincaid sofa

Kincaid

First, know your measurements. This simple bit of knowledge will keep you from making a mistake. Knowing the measurements of the room, as well as the space where you will place the sofa, will make it much easier to choose the right one. As a general rule, it shouldn't be so small that it gets lost in the space or so big that the room feels crowded.

Flexsteel reclining sofa

Flexsteel

Next, consider how you use the space. It is a room where you spend time watching TV or is it a space for entertaining guests? Do you like to kick back with your feet up or is it a more formal space? Knowing the answers to these questions is important. For example, if this is a space for gathering to watch a football game you might be more inclined to choose a sofa with built in recliners.

Sunbrella fabric sofa

Flexsteel

Now, think about who will be using the sofa. This is key when choosing a fabric. For example, if there are children or pets in the home you will need something that's low maintenance and easy to clean. Sunbrella and Revolution fabrics are both excellent choices. These heavy duty fabrics have many designer options. With these stylish performance fabrics you just can't go wrong.

sofas with style

Kincaid

You can't forget to consider style. If you're planning to keep other pieces in the room then you will need a sofa that works with those styles. Also think about what direction you want to the room to go. For example, if your goal is to update the space then stay away from traditional elements such as a skirt and opt for something with a more tailored look.

sofas with quality construction

Kincaid

Finally, look for a sofa with high quality construction. Often, what makes a sofa so valuable is what you can't see. When shopping for a sofa ask about the frame, the spring system and warranty. Steel springs and eight-way-hand-tied spring systems are always an indicator that the sofa is well made.

We know that choosing the right sofa for your home and your family is important and we always want to help you make the right decision. When you shop our showroom you can rely on our designers to help you find the one that will be a perfect fit.

One of the most common requests we get from customers is that they want to lighten and brighten their home. A home filled with too many dark pieces, especially those with little natural light, can almost feel cave-like. Dark furniture and fabrics can soak up all the light in the room. So if you feel like your home is too dark then check out these five ways to instantly lighten and brighten your spaces to give your home a fresh new look.

watermill linen bed frame

Eastern Accents

Brighten and update a dark bedroom by replacing your wood bed with one that's upholstered in linen. You might opt for a more heavy duty fabric, such as polyester, but as long as it's light in color it will create a fresh look and create contrast with wood nightstands. Many upholstered beds are now available in fabrics such as Sunbrella, which is easy to clean and care for.

Pop colors on a white canvas. A white sofa against a white wall might sound boring but when you layer in bright colors and patterns it becomes a bold and exciting look. Light will bounce all around a space with layered white surfaces while a mix of color and pattern adds interest.

Uttermost lamp

Uttermost

Don't rely on overhead lighting. Create pools of light throughout your home with well-placed lamps. Foyers and hallways often need extra lighting but think beyond those spaces. Any spot that light doesn't reach is a perfect excuse to add some style with a unique lamp.

Uttermost mirrors

Uttermost

Decorate with mirrors. Decorative mirrors can hang over a chest in a narrow entry or above a sideboard in a small dining area. A mirror will open up the space and bounce light around the room. Reflective finishes on frames, such as silver or gold, will lend themselves to a lighter look.

Riverside linen panels

Riverside

Let the light in. Replace heavy or formal drapes with simple linen panels. You should use something heavy enough to provide privacy but also light enough to let the light filter through. Panels should be easy to adjust so you can let in any amount of light to suit your mood.

Follow these tips to make your home lighter and brighter. Adding light fabrics and soft colors to dark or outdated spaces will also give your home a more modern feel and a fresh look. Get started today by visiting our showroom to find out about more ways to lighten up your home.

prints / pillow / rug / bedding / print

  • When decorating with florals opt for darker colors. Add some drama to a space with floral prints in deep violets and inky blues. Matted in white they're perfect against a dark wall for a feminine touch that's anything but fussy.
  • Think about florals in a new way. A dose of black adds an edge to watercolor florals. Pop these pillows onto a sofa, a bed or a window seat that needs a sleek touch of color. Mix them pillows in charcoal grey for texture and even more of a sophisticated feel.
  • Make a statement underfoot. Exaggerated florals in rich hues pop against a black background. This is the kind of look that says you love color but in a refined way.
  • Use classic palettes. A mix of patterns in black and white and shades of grey are always sophisticated and chic. Who says florals always have to be colorful? Even with the various mix of patterns there is something very reassuring in the calm that the lack of color creates.
  • Don't forget about metallic accents. Floral silhouettes in black and white almost have a mysterious feel in this polished silver frame. Simple artwork, such as pretty floral prints, can be beautiful and interesting.

If you think you can't create a sophisticated look with florals, think again. The rules have changed and floral looks are dark, modern and edgy. We can help you incorporate this look into your home in big or small ways. Call or visit our showroom to get started.
