The Dos and Don'ts of Bedroom Design

Written by

Let's talk about bedroom design. Since this is the place where you begin and end your day it's so important to get it right. When these elements come together it creates a space where you can rest and recharge in order to be prepared for all of life's demands. We've put together a list of bedroom design Dos and Don'ts so that you can make the most of this space by deciding what's working for you and what isn't.

DO make it a clutter free zone. It's not easy to relax in a cluttered space so you shouldn't over-accessorize. Try to keep nightstands and other surfaces free of unnecessary items.

DON'T use this as a space to experiment with your style every time a new trend pops up on Pinterest. If there's too much going on in one space it can create sensory overload making it difficult for your brain to prepare for sleep.

DON'T skimp on bedding. Luxury linens are a great investment because they create a spa-like feel in your bedroom. Plus, high-quality bedding will far outlast cheaper options and give your bedroom a designer look.

DO invest in a high-quality mattress as well. This may be the most important “do” of all. If you don't sleep well you'll never appreciate a well-designed bedroom.

DO install the right window treatments. If you're a light sleeper then consider shades or curtains that will block the light when necessary but allow it to shine through when you need a boost of sunshine.

DON'T rely on a single overhead light. Place lamps on nightstands or install sconce lights on either side of the bed. This provides a soft light for reading and creates a more relaxed vibe.

DON'T overcrowd the room with furniture. You should be able to easily walk through the space and around the bed. If storage is an issue then consider a bed that features built-in drawers. This will allow you to sneak in a little extra storage and free up some space in the room.

DO choose pieces with the right scale. For example, in a bedroom with high ceilings a tall headboard is a smart choice.

You can easily correct these Don’ts to Dos and turn your bedroom into the one you've always wanted. If you still can't get it right, or you simply want a new look in the space, then meet with one of our designers to stark making a plan for your bedroom today.

One Bed Three Styled Ways

Written by

There are so many things to love about upholstered beds. They're a great way to break up a matching bedroom set, they always soften the space and they're just so comfortable. Best of all? They're so versatile! You can create so many different looks using a classic upholstered bed and to prove it we've taken one bed and styled it three ways.

bed style rustic casual

A rustic casual bedroom has all the comforts you want in a restful space. Distressed furniture contrasts well with the softness of a curvy bed draped in fabric. Artwork inspired by a vintage map gives the space a sense of history while industrial style lighting adds a modern vibe.

bed style modern classic

chandelier / art / bed / nightstand & dresser

You can never go wrong with a timeless look. Classic linen paired with rich wood tones is always a winning combination. Put a modern twist on this look with statement lighting. A chandelier or pendant with a structural quality always feels modern. Quirky artwork will give the space personality and this painting has a fun farmhouse look.

bed style luxury

A space doesn't have to be over the top to be luxurious. Choosing traditional pieces that repeat the soft curve of the bed creates an elegant look. Go glam with lighting that practically sparkles like this gold banded chandelier. Contrast the traditional look of these pieces with modern artwork in bright hues for a unexpected burst of color.

Designing a bedroom with an upholstered bed lets you create a space with your own unique style. Visit our showroom today to start the process of designing your bedroom with a custom upholstered bed from Kincaid Furniture.

How to Create a Luxurious Bedroom

Written by

If there's one room in your home where you deserve a little luxury it's your bedroom. More than a place to sleep, the bedroom is where you begin and end your day. Dreaming of your own personal luxury retreat? It's totally possible with just a few easy changes. Turn your bedroom into that luxurious space you've always wanted with these five tips.

Start with the bed. Obviously, you need a great mattress. But what you put on the bed is just as important. Don't skimp on blankets and pillows. Think layers! You should be able to sink into your bed at the end of the day. Layer your bed with high-quality bedding then add plush pillows and throws in rich textures. Drape a faux fur throw over the foot of the bed so you can easily grab it on cool nights.

Riverside nightstand

Our next tip may sound simple, but it's important. Clear the clutter! If there's one thing luxurious spaces always have in common it's a lack of clutter. With all the chaos of day-to-day life, you need a space where you can clear your mind before you go to sleep. So remove all those unnecessary items from your nightstand and keep it simple with a lamp and fresh flowers.

Hang a statement mirror. An interesting mirror with a polished frame has a posh feel. Place it over the bed to create a focal point or hang it above a dresser as an alternative to a standard mirror. It will create a pretty focal point and double as artwork.

Kincaid ottoman

Every bedroom feels a little more luxurious with extra seating. If you have the space then create a separate conversation area with a pair of chairs and an ottoman. Even if you only have room for a single chair choose one that's cozy and comfortable. The point is to carve out a little space in your bedroom that's just for you. Style it with a chic pillow, and if room allows, a pretty ottoman so you can kick back and relax with a good book.

Layer lighting. Overhead lighting simply isn't enough for a bedroom. There are many ways to incorporate different levels of light. Place lamps on nightstands or install sconce lights on either side of the bed. Put overhead lighting on a dimmer and add lamps near seating or any dark pockets of the space. Layered lighting gives you options and great lighting always makes a space feel more high-end.

Creating a luxurious bedroom is about more than how it looks. When all of these elements come together it creates a space that makes you feel good. This will result in your own retreat where you'll sleep well every night. What's more luxurious than that?

Use books to add interest and height. This is an easy way to add style to any space. Stack two or three books on a chest and top with a decorative piece. Go with a theme. Use decorating books or those from your favorite author. Books in black and white are chic while using books in one bright hue adds a pop of color.

Kincaid wallpaper

Want a dramatic focal point? Create an accent wall behind the bed. Try a grasscloth wallpaper to add a rich texture to an upholstered headboard or a fresh coat of paint for contrast with a wood or metal bed. Layer in lots of pillows to complete the look.

Kincaid artwork

Don't overthink artwork. Casually prop it against the wall on top of a chest or dresser. Layer in one or two accessories to add more interest. Just be sure to use larger pieces and keep them to a minimum to avoid a cluttered look. Vary elements such as metallics and porcelain or ceramic to add dimension.

Kincaid lamp

Update the lighting. Lamps and light fixtures have a major effect on the feel of a room. Opt for dramatic or oversized lamps for nightstands, especially with a tall headboard. Switch out standard overhead lighting for a statement-making chandelier.

Five Simple Ways to Decorate Above a Bed

Written by

Waking up in a beautiful bedroom is the best way to start your day. When your surroundings are inspired you will feel the same way. A beautiful space doesn't have to be complicated. You can easily create style in your bedroom by choosing one or two simple pieces to hang over the bed. Wake up to inspiration with one of these five simple ways to decorate above the bed.

Riverside mirror

Classic accessories always work no matter what your style. Hang a sunburst mirror over the bed to create a pretty focal point. Not only will this draw the eye upward but mirrors also help to bounce light around the room.

Kincaid artwork

A bed this pretty doesn't need to be overshadowed by too many accessories but it does deserve something beautiful overhead. Hang one large piece of artwork to make a stylish statement. Choose a piece with a substantial frame to create a look that has presence.

Kincaid map art

Add a bold look in a simple way with black and white. An over-sized  map adds character to an otherwise straightforward and neutral space. An unexpected look in a bedroom, grids and curves are an interesting contrast to the hard lines of the bed.

Kincaid hanging prints

Bring on the color by hanging a pair of prints in rich bold hues. Create a relaxed flow in the room by repeating the colors already found in the space or shake things up by introducing something new and different.

Kincaid hanging art

Sometimes the best way to decorate a bed is by hanging art above the nightstand rather than over the headboard, especially in a bedroom with only one nightstand. This also helps to create balance in a room with a tall headboard. Layer in accessories and lighting to create depth.

Do you have trouble decorating over the bed? Don't overthink it. Just keep it simple with the approach that sometimes less is actually more. Find these looks and more in our showroom.

Shopping for new bedroom furniture seems easy enough, right? You just go to a furniture store and pick out something you like. Know the measurements of the bedroom. The easiest way to have this info at the ready is to store it on your phone. When you’re shopping this makes it so easy to decide how many pieces will fit the space. Also, if you're thinking of upgrading to a king size bed, you’ll be able to make that decision on the spot.

How much storage do you actually need in your bedroom? In a small bedroom you can save space by choosing a bed with built-in storage. If you have a large bedroom with a huge closet you might not need both a dresser and a chest of drawers. Plus, you can use that extra space to create a cozy reading nook with a big comfy chair.

bedroom furniture 3

Will you have a television in your bedroom? If so, you could benefit from a media dresser or bureau. These pieces typically have an open shelf or drop front drawers that will store media components.

bedroom furniture 4

What style will flow well with the rest of your home? Do you want a matching set or do you prefer a more custom look? You might want to mix it up! An easy way to do this is by starting with an upholstered bed. It’s a soft look and it works with literally any style of furniture.

bedroom furniture 5

Are you in your forever home or in a temporary situation? If there is a possibility of moving, you should consider the style of the furniture. A very specific look will only work in specific homes but a classic look is versatile enough to go anywhere.

Knowing the answers to these questions makes shopping for bedroom furniture a little less stressful. However, even if you don’t we are here to help you. Whether you need help designing a custom look or if you just want someone to measure the space to help you determine what will best fit, we’ve got you covered.

There are many elements you should strive for when decorating a bedroom. Comfort, of course, is an important one but there are others that you should feel simply by walking into the space. Many of these elements can be achieved with an upholstered bed. Before you rule out the possibility of an upholstered bed, read this. These are the five reasons we believe you’ll never regret choosing an upholstered bed.

Your bedroom should feel cozy. How do you make something feel cozier? Cover it with fabric! Upholstered beds add softness to a space that wood beds can’t. Especially when layered with lots of plush pillows.

You can literally use almost anything with an upholstered bed. This is an easy way to achieve that collected-over-time look. With upholstered beds there is no worry about matching wood finishes. You can blend styles to create a high-end custom look.

5 Elements of a Restful Bedroom

Written by

Our lives are busier than ever and getting rest is so important. Everyone deserves a beautiful space where they can relax and sleep well. But it should be more than just beautiful. It should be a place where it’s easy for you to rest. Your bedroom should be a calming place where you can wind down, feel relaxed, and get the good night’s sleep you deserve. These are the five elements that we believe every bedroom should have to make it a restful space.

restful bedroom 1

Symmetry brings order to a space. When things are orderly you instantly feel more relaxed and will naturally sleep better. Bring symmetry to your bedroom with a pair of matching nightstands topped with matching lamps. Take the look even further with matching artwork flanking the bed above the nightstands.

restful bedroom 2

You should have something at the foot of the bed. An ottoman or a bench provides a place to drop an extra blanket you can easily grab in the middle of the night when you get cold. An ottoman with storage also helps to keep the space clutter free.

restful bedroom 3

The right window treatments might be one of the most important elements of a restful bedroom. Curtains or shades should have the ability to block out light at night and easily be adjusted to let light pour in when you wake up. Shades or panels should have a blackout lining to allow for restful sleep.

restful bedroom 4

Invest in a high quality mattress such as Jamison. This makes all the difference in not only how you sleep at night but also how you feel in the morning, which sets the tone for your whole day. But don’t stop there. Top the mattress with a well-made set of bedding and high quality pillows. You will melt into your bed at night when it is as comfortable as it is beautiful.

restful bedroom 5

Placing the right lighting in the room is just as important as blocking it out. Choose three-way lamps for the nightstands to allow for soft light to read by at night. When purchasing bedroom furniture, look for nightstands with built-in nightlights like these from Kincaid. They provide a soft light at the bottom of the piece that will allow you to get up in the middle of the night without turning on a bright, jarring light.

Which of these elements is your bedroom missing? We want to help you make your bedroom the restful space you deserve. Visit our showroom where we can help you choose the right mattress and design your beautiful and restful space.
